RECORDING 9: THE THIRD TRIAL.

The worst has happened... and now you're all here, in the living room where all the trials so far have taken place. As all of you enter, the Vessel is there - Jack, looking expectant and as militaristic as ever.
On one of the tables away from the center is a small enclosed box entitled 'VOTES', with slips of paper nearby and a pen. It's sufficiently away from what will be the 'main' action, but not enough to really give anyone complete privacy as they vote.
Once everyone is inside, the doors automatically shut and lock themselves, leaving you trapped in here with the Vessel...and each other.
One of you is a murderer...however, in this game, the guilty do not need to be voted out. As long as there are enough people voted out that matches the victims...then it will be accepted.
...But, can you really let someone get away with murder...?
The choice is up to you.
But this time...potentially, someone innocent...must die as well.
PEOPLE TO VOTE OUT: 2
WEEK 3 VOTING

RULES + QUESTIONS
You've all be here before, so you should remember how this goes. But for the sake of everyone, I'll repeat the rules. You best listen up, because again, I don't tolerate insubordination.
- Everyone who's still alive gets one vote. Whoever receives the most votes will be executed.
- The number of people executed will equal the number of victims. Since two people have been murdered, the two people with the most votes will be executed.
- Any deaths that occur during trials do not count as executions. Someone must still be voted out and executed.
- You can't vote for the dead, even if they were the one who murdered someone.
- The person who will be executed doesn't have to have been the killer. If you wanna get rid of someone, go ahead and vote someone to put them up for death. However, you must make an attempt to determine the identity of the killer.
- Voting is mandatory. Anyone who does not vote will die.
Make sure you cast your votes into the box. [ gestures at it ] You have six hours.
If you need anymore clarification, go ahead and ask. You have your orders. Go ahead and get to it!

It was a mess - books fallen off the shelf, furniture upturned, and a trail of blood leading out to the trophy room.
[He then presents Flayn's staff and Some throwing needles
I found the staff under one of the bookshelves, and these needles embedded in them.
The walls and floor are either soaked or burnt in places - as if done by elemental damage.
And finally, when I looked for Miss Flayn, I found a half-eatened ration in the kitchen
Did I miss anything, Mr. Armburst?

Flayn was found in the trophy room. had a large hole in her chest and on the left, which seemed to be from being impaled through by one of the animal heads' antlers in the trophy room.
There were cuts from wind magic which also seemed to line up with something small, thin, and sharp. The bruises made seemed to from objects hitting her, rather than anyone hitting her with their hands or feet. These were partially healed.
It seems holy magic was used, in order for her to heal herself, I imagine.
There was also some demonic energy present. The holy magic and demonic magic seemed to somehow originate from the same source, which would've been likely Flayn.
She mentioned before that Nosferatu was unique for a healing spell, and this might have something to do with it.
It also looked like she was missing her heart.
Romani will be able to tell you anymore additional details I wasn't able to find from looking at the body.
[ Anyway... ]
Beyond that, in the library I was able to identify what seemed to be fire and water magic intermingled around the books. There was the same holy magic from which I assume to be Flayn, and the wind magic that caused her wounds. However, there seemed to be the presence of some wind magic that came from Flayn as well.
I found traces of that demonic magic once more, and some other magic with no element. It appeared to be some type of passive magic.

There was a large amount of damage to the area, to the point where there was rubble from the walls and floor all over the place. The walls were dented, indicating something heavy being thrown multiple times. The furniture showed evidence of being cut by a large sword, but not as the primary target. Finally, there were claw marks gouged into the walls and floor.
Seteth-san was also found unconscious on the scene, along with his spear and shield, though from what I could tell, neither appear to have been used in whatever happened.
Finally, we found Haku-san's body there. I believe those who investigated his body more closely would be able to give more details.

Haku's body was found in the hallway between the trophy room and... that jail room. His throat was slit, most likely by a short blade, and, I would guess, not by someone who does this for a living -- it wasn't quite deep or clean enough.
There was blunt force trauma to his back, that left a round mark, larger than the miasma-producing stone that was found near his body. [ Assuming someone else will talk about that...?? ] It looked like it could have been from a mace or something.
There were a number of smaller bruises on his front side, but there didn't appear to be any obvious defensive wounds.
...When the body was found, his hand was outstretched, and there was blood on the tip of his finger from writing what appeared to be some sort of dying message. All that was written was the letter S. Or I guess it could have been a numeral 5, but that seems less likely.
Before anyone asks, given the letter in question, I had Dr. Archaman stand by as I performed the examination so he could attest that I wasn't tampering with any evidence or giving false testimony.

It's a new week, so she's making a show of loading her gun with five bullets... she already had it loaded throughout the week, but she had taken them out specifically so she could put them in again, in front of everyone. As if daring anyone to object, again.
A quick glance was thrown around the room. If you had a good relationship with Rosa, you got a little nod and a a subtle little smile. If you didn't have such a relationship, you got a suspicious look instead. ...You know who you are, right?]
...
[She holders her gun to unholster her notebook, and then lifts the cover to display a written message:
"For those with a reason they could not have been the culprit or one of the culprits, a COHERENT reason, step forward and let it be heard. It'll be more convincing now than if you have to rely on it later."]

I might have a solid reason for taking the motive, but if I say "if there is only one culprit, one of the best options right now would be to vote me out", that should be enough, should it not?
Especially given the rules of this game.
[this is not to say that she wants to be voted out but she's making a point.]

My defense is pretty obvious: while I could have, in theory, dropped the moose head onto Flayn, the rest of the injuries are way beyond my physical ability. Same for Haku and the injury to Seteth.

His voice is kind of hoarse, and it still cracks as he speaks.]
...
I will admit my memories of what happened are not entirely clear, but I will try to recount my actions and what I saw last night. I was... trying to patrol to see if I could... perhaps stop something. Anything.
[He breaths in shakily, trying to keep his voice steady.]
I... am not sure how much of the fight I heard, but... I definitely heard some commotion. Something roaring, along with the sounds of combat...
When I turned the corner, I saw something that shouldn’t exist here. It was smaller than it should have been, but it was... familiar all the same. I didn’t get a good look at it before everything went black, and I am still... very uncertain if it is truly what I saw, but...
[...he hesitates a bit, then presses on ahead. It's not like it really matters anymore, does it?]
There are creatures in my world called demonic beasts. That’s... what it looked like.

INJURIES AND HEALING CHECK
We should check if anyone has signs of having been injured last night. Or healed. Since it seems to not be working like it should, there should be signs someone was healed, right?
[He looks around, like he's expecting someone to take this task off his hands.

Weapon and Scent check!
[Of course a smart killer would have hidden or destroyed the murder weapon. So it's not JUST this he's checking. He's also sniffing for blood. Human AND non-human now that he knows there was a beast AND Flayn wasn't human- both on the weapons and on the people themselves. He'll also check for lingering miasma since the stone was spewing it]

[Emil takes out his dagger. It's sizable -- he's used to large daggers since that's necessary to kill trolls, after all -- but it doesn't seem to smell like blood at all.

J'ACCUSE
With the evidence we have on hand, we can establish the following scenario:
Haku-kun likely met with Flayn-chan in the Library with the intention of assassination, believe Flayn-chan would be an easy target as she never really spoke much about her capabilities and only the barest about her abilities in the previous trial. Caught off-guard by her counter-attack, it's likely the fight continued onto the Trophy Room, where Flayn-chan was killed and her... heart-stone? Stone crest... came out.
Seteth-san came into the hall just in time to bear witness to the transformation of Haku-kun via the stone touching him, but was knocked unconscious by someone unseen. This same someone then fought with the beast-Haku and ultimately slayed him.
Because of the abnormal size of the sword, and the fact that out of the three people whose weapons match the marking, only one of them is the size of the adult male that likely attacked Seteth-san from behind... the conclusion is that...
Zabuza-san is the one who killed Haku-kun after Haku-kun killed Flayn-chan.

Then allow me a single question: do you want to render his death entirely meaningless?
no subject
Zabuza-san, we don't know how reliable that statement about them letting someone free is. You don't believe that that's what will happen, do you?
In which case--which is the mercy? Keeping you here? Or allowing you to be killed out there?

I think by now we have most of this figured out, and we know who the culprit is. We should shift our focus to the other task at hand here: who to vote for.
Two people have to be voted out. At least one of those two is going to be an innocent person. We need to decide on the best way to pick who that person is going to be. Volunteers would be preferable, if anybody wants to speak up now.
But there's also the motive to consider. If we don't vote for Zabuza, he can potentially alert the Foundation to what is going on here and get us some help. The trade off there is that we would have to vote out two innocent people, and there isn't a guarantee of his success.
Regardless of what we do, I feel we should decide by a majority vote.
First, should we vote out Zabuza and one other, or vote out two others and allow Zabuza to leave and attempt to get help for us?
Second, who should be voted out?
As for me, I am of the mind that we should make the attempt with Zabuza going for help. At this point, there's no denying it: we all WILL die if something doesn't change. We need to take a risk like this, if it has the potential to pay off. What's more, he wouldn't even need to go that far, he just needs to get outside of the house and get cell phone service. Then he can call our contacts at the Foundation to get help sent here. We can even prepare for that too, and give him specific messages to send.
It's a difficult choice to make, I acknowledge that. But I think it's worth it.

EXECUTION: MONSTER SLAYING (ONE CIVILIAN CASUALTY)
When he's done, he turns around, laughing. He's holding the votes up in his hand, with a mocking air.]
Soldiers need to do better about working together as a unit. You don't decide as one, then you'll end up in a lot worse situations than the one you're in now.
ZABUZA, FRONT AND CENTER NOW.
[He barks out the order, face hardening. Then he looks at everyone else in turn, knowing that they're all desperate to know who the second victim of today's execution will be.]
There was almost a three-way tie here, but luckily two of your number decided to break that tie and give us a clear winner for the second execution today.
[With that, his face breaks into a smirk as his eyes end up on--]
RIN TOHSAKA, FRONT AND CENTER
[His face stays as a smirk as he walks out into everyone, knocking Zabuza aside the head with his rifle to make sure he's compliant, and grabbing the both of them and pulling them into the center of the room. The look he gives everyone remaining tells them that they should stand down or face the consequences. After he pulls them into the center, he waves a hand and a miasma barrier springs up between everyone. He does give them a a brief moment of attention, turning to look at them.] That's for your own protection.
[Jack-- no, the Vessel takes a piece of evidence that everyone should be familiar with by now, Flayn's heart and holds it, tossing it up into the air once before catching it.]
The execution will now begin!
[Jack winds up and he throws it like a baseball, aiming for Zabuza's head.
As soon as the heart makes contact with Zabuza, it seems to stick to him, oozing a horrible, viscous purple liquid...the liquid turns into tendrils, snaking all over Zabuza as he begins to give a few grunts of pain, tearing vainly at them.
But there is no escape - not even as Rin takes a step back, looking on in a grim sort of horror. As the liquid rises, horrible cracking noises can be heard, his body being broken down to reform once more. Though this must be absolutely agonizing, Zabuza does not scream.
No - nothing like that escapes him - until the very end, as the purple liquid has almost swallowed him whole, when a strangled name full of regret forces it's way past his lips before he is consumed entirely.]
Ha...ku....
[He vanishes entirely under the liquid, becoming a single large mass - the only noises being that of bones being smashed and placed into different positions - until a large, lizard hand cuts through, revealing the horrible monster underneath. A monster of of rock scales and cleaver like back spines with a distinctly sharklike tail - culminating in a wide mouthful of pointed teeth, about the size of a large horse, who gives a roar that seems to shake the very foundations of the house once it lays eyes on Rin.
In the span between the Monster's 'birth' and it's roar, Rin looks towards the people trapped behind the barrier, her eyes flickering between aquamarine and dark purple before she seems to resolve herself, saying only one thing:]
Battler, don't look...!
[The monster lunges, and Rin reinforces her legs to jump back, pointing out her hand and getting ready for a fight.
It is not a very long one.
A few minutes, perhaps, is all it takes - Rin fights back bravely, even using some of her gems to attack with greater firepower and attempt to protect herself...but in the face of something like this, it's useless.
Eventually, she slips up - makes a wrong move - and it's all the monster needs.
In the space between one breath and the next, the beast reaches in, grabs the lower half of her body in it's jaws, and bites down.
There's a horrifying noise of a spine severing in two, along with Rin's agonized scream as she hits the floor, tears spilling out of her eyes as she tries to get up to get away -
And then realizes, in horror and shock, That she doesn't have anything below her stomach to do it with. Her guts...what remain of them...are spilling out of her...
The Monster merely swallows it's horrifying meal, then goes to finish her off, the mouth opening wide -
when Jack's voice cuts in.]
This is taking too long. Let's go ahead and finish this up, shall we?
[Jack raises a hand to touch the visor (not a scouter!) on his face. Almost immediately, a projection extends around his head. His voice calls out, almost seeming to echo across the room.]
I've got you in my sights!
[At that, he picks up his rifle and starts to fire. For those of you who are familiar with firearms, the way the gun is shooting is... odd? It's almost as though the rifle is jerking, aiming directly at the vulnerable parts of both the still alive Rin and the Monster. He's firing fast, going through two clips of ammunition before the job is done. The barrel of the rifle is smoking.]
Clean sweep.
[He turns towards the unwilling spectators, making a quick gesture to lower the miasma wall - and snapping to attention as the doors to the rest of the house fling open behind him.]
DISMISSED!
[With that, he vanishes - And leaves nothing but two bullethole riddled corpses, as the monster's changes back to Zabuza's body, Flayn's Crest Stone falling out and rolling to a stop as blood begins to pool around it.
Zabuza and Rin Tohsaka are dead.]

[ as soon as rin calls out for him, he'll be running towards the teenager to cover his eyes with his hand. it is not a gentle grip either, as he wants to keep him in place throughout. ]
