Things had changed so rapidly in the past few days.

The loss of two of them hung over like a shroud, made even worse by the fact that an innocent person had been executed.

....Even if it was, there wasn't much they could do now. Yuuko herself hasn't shown up in public since the trial, and while some have talked to her, she's been...subdued.

Did the trial hurt her just as much as them?

Regardless, the island is still beautiful, if deadly. Summer continues, beaming down on all of them, the waves of the sea warm and inviting.

But even if things look bleak...

They have something in their hands that will soon lead to the Truth, and the heart of this matter.

And in the air...lies a heavy sense that everything is about to change.

[Erhard's been watching and listening silently this whole time. Kurama's idea perfectly echoes his own, and once Ruler agrees he quietly speaks up.]

Maybe anyone who's comfortable with the idea should repeat Ruler's experiment. The question is, should whoever is doing it be observed by someone who stays awake all night, or is there a chance it won't work unless the person is alone?

The emotions are... extremely intense, it probably would help to have someone close by if it happens again.

I rarely sleep, I can monitor vitals while others try it. Though... I'm willing to subject myself to the experiment, too.

The more diverse data we can gather, the more we can learn. It would be ideal if everyone tried it at least twice, but I imagine not everyone would be willing to subject themselves to anything potentially mind-altering.

If it's as rough as Ruler says, I don't think it would be fair to ask most of the people here to do that.

No, I would think not. It's why I'm volunteering, I've... I can tolerate mental trauma fairly well.

Doctors have to learn to push aside their feelings when they witness terrible things, so they're not paralyzed and prevented from doing lifesaving work. It's easier for me than most, however.

Hmm, wouldn't it be easier just to have everyone who actually wants to try it stay with the book at night? That way we get it all out of the way, and if we all get haunted at once, that means either all of us are seeing things, or none of us are!

For starters, I was the one who found that book... and...

[ His gaze lowers for a moment... and then lifts back to her face. ]

We need more people to help anyway, right? And I'd rather it be me than you or Ryuji.

Giving that book to Ruler was probably the right thing to do. You wouldn't hide some important piece of information from Makoto just because she might get hurt, would you?

As for how many people we need... I dunno. I feel like we should have a solid idea of what to do differently next time, especially if things go south, you know?

Then... we can take measures to be more cautious.

We should split the group of people standing guard into two groups, though. One group to watch over us, and then another to sleep away from the book. The second group can switch out with the first group after a few hours.

That way we don't run the risk of people falling asleep on the job.

I can stay awake the whole night, though more hands and eyes are always good to have... Also thank you for dealing with us despite the state that we were in.
