Things had changed so rapidly in the past few days.

The loss of two of them hung over like a shroud, made even worse by the fact that an innocent person had been executed.

Was this....how the rest of the game was going to go...?🗈

....Even if it was, there wasn't much they could do now. Yuuko herself hasn't shown up in public since the trial, and while some have talked to her, she's been...subdued.

Did the trial hurt her just as much as them?

Regardless, the island is still beautiful, if deadly. Summer continues, beaming down on all of them, the waves of the sea warm and inviting.

But even if things look bleak...

They have something in their hands that will soon lead to the Truth, and the heart of this matter.

And in the air...lies a heavy sense that everything is about to change.

Okay, start at the beginning. Why is the Chapel gone and what is that book?

[He'll let Ruler do his thing and spare him the awkwardness.]

Well, I was minding my own buisness, wandering about, when suddenly I hear clicking noises coming from the chapel. I go in, poked my head through the door, and there was Takumi in front of a secret passageway!

I think that was part of the epitaph or something. The secret passage.

The epitaph, huh. I still wonder who wrote it, though. Since neither of the witches did, apparently.

What, neither of them? Maybe there was a third witch somewhere.

Anyway. So the epitaph turned out to a bunch of hints for a series of tests- I mean puzzles that Takumi, Ruler and I had to solve in order to find that book he's holding...

There's a third Witch! That's their mentor who showed them how to play. I have no idea what she's called.

I asked about it, and Feathers said something something about how the Game is also in the mental realm, so one of us could be like, subconsciously really fond of puzzles.

[Why does he shoot an amused look at Ruler here.]

Anyway, though, I think she was just guessing, too. So it's a mystery about the mystery that maybe isn't our main mystery!

Her name is Lambdadelta, apparently. The fake Yuuko-san insisted that Lambdadelta-san wouldn't interfere, though.

And I know that the other Witch -- I guess we're calling her Feathers-san now? -- she said she was going to inquire about it, to see if someone outside of those three are messing with their so-called game.

Why do all of the witches have weird names? I can't even pronounce that. Lamb-da-delta? What sort of name is that?

At least this Feathers person is making an effort to look into this. Wherever they are.

Lambda and delta. Lambda is the eleventh letter of the Greek alphabet, while delta is the fourth.

Hey, is Lambdadelta the one that got married and disappeared forever on her honeymoon? I think Yuuko admired her a lot, but she got totally rejected because Lambdadelta had a husband now.

[He's definitely misunderstood something and you're going to have to break up his crack ship now.]

And I'm calling her Feathers because Wings is no good, and it's easier than Bird Witch or Other Witch or Not-Yuuko Witch. This Game just keeps getting more complicated, doesn't it? You never know who's going to suddenly appear next!

I don't actually know, since I haven't asked too much about Lambdadelta-san. . .

Dammit, how many witches ARE there?

Yeah. I wrote a letter asking and she thought that the fake Yuuko-san wrote it, so I went to see her and ask about it.

She actually got livid when I told her about it and said she couldn't even see it at all. And when I repeated the epitaph to her, all she heard was static.

Huh... That is weird!

Are we sure she isn't lying? Because I'm fairly sure you couldn't miss it.

I'm fairly certain. It's possible for someone to cast a spell to make something visible to certain people, and more than that-- I saw her using a magic that felt like a curse. The way she reacted... it definitely didn't seem like a lie.

I doubt she'd use that kind of magic in front of me just to simply show off.

Y'think she's not supposed to know about it?

I think so. Whoever did it wouldn't block something like that out unless there was a reason for it.

Yuuko’s supposed to be really powerful, isn’t she? So if it’s something she couldn’t do anything about, does that mean the Epitaph’s writer is even stronger than the Witch of Dimensions??

[His eyes are sparkling about this. Hm.]

Whoa! He solved it?

[ Looking over to Takumi. ]

You did good!

[ Now back to Wheat Thick. ]

And then what happened?

Well, technichally we solved it. Ruler and I helped.

[Credit where it's due. Gotta have that.]

Turns out the "nights" were more like vague instructions for how to complete the maze. "Go through the single door, go to the door that has a number corresponding to the number of petals on the door," that sort of thing.

So, the last bit of the te- Puzzle, we had to hang up this fancy Chinese bell, grab some stuff to light a fire from a burnt out room, and start ringing the bell while there was a small fire under the bell, heating it up. We did that, the bell changed sounds when it was heated, and all of a sudden the whole room goes up in flames!

There was a Chinese bell? You don't happen to remember the exact details of what it looked like, do you? [ He's Chinese, so he's admittedly curious. ]

Well, it was brown and lumpy and sounded like you were banging a hammer into a pot until you warmed it up!

[IT WAS A RITUAL BELL, MORON!]

Sounds like a bianzhong. . . or maybe one of the bronze bells that were found in the tomb of Marquis Yi? Or one of the other emperors. I wouldn't be able to tell you the specifics unless I actually saw a picture of it.

Sounds like you all had an adventure. And then it lead you guys to a book?

Yeah, it should have! But the book was actually in the library and our resident Akira Kusuru got to it first!

[Look, the Foundation has way too many of this kid, they ought to rename them sometimes.]
