WEEK 3 MINGLE

WEEK 3

Week three opens like the other two weeks, but when you wake up, you know there's been a change in the area. At first, nothing is wrong - but when you look at any window, you aren't greeted with the cheery sight of the outside - instead, there's just a cold, harsh blackness. Trying to leave out the doors is impossible, too - if you try, you just find yourself back on the couches in the lobby. On top of that....The Staff are beginning to act even stranger, their glitching out becoming more obvious. Sometimes, they seemingly go blank mid sentence and walk away, as if they were reset, and slur or stutter their words.

The weather is...well, non-existent, except for the courtyard, which is still pleasantly snowy. There is still music playing in the halls, and the cover songs continue with some low-key music for the week.

On Monday morning, another memory is returned to everyone. Another piece to the puzzle, one step closer to finding the truth of this place. Yet, it doesn't seem like you're any closer to solving this...

And time still ticks onwards, regardless if you're ready or not.

Pretty eerie, if you ask me. No stars, no nothing. Just... void. And the staff's behavior, especially this morning with Kurosaki... I have a theory.

[tea sip]

I suspect that the outside areas -- the slopes, the forest, etc -- were part of an illusion; camouflage for this Resort organism, allowing it to blend in with the surroundings and help trap prey. But now, something is rotten in the state of Denmark, as it were. The Resort creature is having problems maintaining its facade. Its attention must be elsewhere. The question is -- where?

[Ripley frowns.]

The whole resort is like a giant...living thing from what Akira discovered the first week, right? This is a wild theory, but it could be that it's sick and doesn't have the capacity to keep everything contained. Like how the dead are suddenly able to communicate so much more information to us.

[God, not even that made sense to herself, but she's riding it for now.]

Some sort of illness, hm? That's a thought. If the organism is dealing with a disease, it's ability to keep the immersion up is probably minimized.

And since we're currently trapped here, it may be in our best interests to save our host.

[Ripley nods, grimacing.]

Maybe. [A pause, then a thought.] Maybe...we're the disease. The...uh, white blood cell thing attacked Akira when he entered the vents, didn't it? Maybe it's considering us to be foreign objects, and it's working as hard as it can to get rid of us.

[By...pitting them against each other in a game of mafia, apparently.]

That's just a theory, of course.

Perhaps. But if we were foreign entities, why would the Resort welcome us in the first place? Maybe we were more than it could handle.

... But if we were somehow "toxic" to the organism, would it not be easier to just... expel us?

I'm an aeronautics person, not a biologist.

[Ripley taps a finger against her chin, frowning.]

The rats eat the people that die here. If we're to follow the analogy that the Resort is a living thing, maybe...maybe it didn't realize we were toxic until we came here.

You know when you eat something and everything is fine until a few hours later and you suddenly realize you've gotten food poisoning?

[if you listen closely, you may hear some laughter]

Oh I am very familiar with the concept. But usually, when you've eaten something like that, the body does try to... ah, get rid of it. One way or another. We haven't been vomited into space yet...

[Ripley lets out a single, dry laugh.] Maybe we ought to be. It'd be a hell of a lot better than this place, that's for sure.

[Oh, God, she sounds like Phil now.]

Or it could be that it's just being worn down by something else. Something like the monsters that roam the halls. Or maybe even something on the outside.

Oh, to long for the sweet embrace of the vacuum of space! [more ghostly laughter]

Something we haven't seen yet. Something we can't see? The possibilities are endless.
