TRIAL

The morning seemed so far away yesterday - yet, it also seems too soon when morning comes and you are all yet again ushered to the third floor by The Lady. The Captain is there, in all of his....glory? It's hard to tell.

The doors close, and he speaks up, this time reclining on one of the couches in the room.

"You know the drill - Since one of you have died during the game, it's your responsibility to try and vote someone out. You have six hours to talk about it, but then-"

He taps on a box on the coffee table in front of him, labeled 'VOTES'.

"-you'll have to put in your vote so someone can be punished. You all saw what happens when you refuse to play, right?"

He leans back, placing his hands behind his head.

"So get to it."

As he says that, music begins to play in the room...

[leveling a gaze firmly at him, unwavering]

I don't think.

I know.

But I meant what I said about Flat Escardos not being a monster. Because he isn't-- what happened to Yoshi-kun isn't Flat-san's fault.

It's Makoto Nijima's fault. [ he pauses, smiling ] I know you want to cover up for your friend but-- she's already gone, you know? I can see it.

[narrows his gaze at Flat, hands curling into fists]

Makoto has nothing to do with Yoshi-kun's death and you know it.

[escardos]

I know that she has everything to do with it. After all, no one else bee-lined to accuse me for something as small as "reacting strangely". And even after I explained that I rarely act "normal", she still continued doing so.

[ a pause ]

And besides, I don't kill. It's too inefficient to waste a human life, especially one that belonged to a friend.

[xenoqueen]

Unless the Barghest was in control of you last night.

Has anyone brought up the possibility that they may both be mafia?

[diesifkilled]

Why would they both be? That doesn't make any sense.

[xenoqueen]

To cast suspicion off of one of them. Let's say Makoto is a mafia member, theoretically. If she were to accuse Flat of being the Barghest, then she would demonstrate herself to be trustworthy and not garner any further suspicion.

[She runs a shaky hand through her hair, frowning.] It's just a thought. Nothing concrete, though.

I... I guess it's possible. [Because everything's possible.]

But it seems like way too risky of a move for them. Every monster we catch makes things harder for the rest of them.

That would be a foolish move. And this seems only based off the opinion that it’s more suspicious for a townsperson to make an argument than anything I’ve actually done.

[purrtagonist]

Flat Escardos doesn't kill.

[he says evenly]

But you're not him, are you?

[escardos]

Would it even matter to you whether I am or not? After all, you're covering for a killer.

[purrtagonist]

Bullshit. Don't drag Makoto's name through the mud like this.

[IMMEDIATELY stepping closer, eyes blazing]

Whatever you are, whoever you are, whatever reason you're doing this, Barghest. . . we're going to stop you.

Mm, then you shouldn't act so selfishly and stop protecting Makoto. [ he doesn't seem shaken at all by akira's demeanor. if anything, he looks...empty. as if his eyes were merely holes that extended for eternity. ] Someone like her is a true danger to humankind's future.

[purrtagonist]

[TIME FOR A GOOD OL' FASHIONED STAREDOWN]

If Makoto were possessed, I guarantee you I'd fight tooth and nail to free her again. Flat-san may not be Makoto, but I'm doing the same for him.

If you don't let Flat-san go, if you don't give him back control of his body, then we'll make you.

[escardos]

[ there's a moment of silence after that last sentence, not much different from a computer trying to process a lengthy amount of information. perhaps that's all that flat escardos is, a computer-like being that operates to the will of the root. or-- ] Flat Escardos' body is not for you to take. [ or perhaps he is something more. in less than a blink of an eye, flat raises his hand, ready to fire ]

I know what the truth is. And I'll make sure you don't kill anyone again, no matter what it takes.

Then you're looking at the wrong person. Miss Tohsaka would probably say something like "You're an idiot! You have it all backwards!" at this time and smack you over the head.
