Week 2 Mingle

WEEK 2

With the nature of this 'game' out, the resort might not look so welcoming anymore. The staff are still ready to jump in and serve guests in any way they can, provided a request doesn't make them short-circuit, and the resort itself seems as warm and cheery as usual. But everyone knows the truth now. This resort is hiding some pretty big secrets, and it's only a matter of time before someone else turns up dead.

The weather is holding steady, at 'cold but still safe for outdoor activities'. The temperature seems to be dipping lower each day, though, and the previously-blue sky is starting to stay grey more often than not. Could that signal an approaching snowstorm? Who know. There is still music playing in the halls, and the cover songs continue with some low-key music for the week.

On Monday morning, another memory is returned to everyone. Another piece to the puzzle, one step closer to finding the truth of this place. But it might not be enough to put everything together yet, that might take some more time.

Most importantly, everyone needs to get to know each other. This 'game' is one of 'know your enemies', and your very survival depends on knowing when someone is acting odd.

Hm... How should I put it...

[Let's see, how do we word this... how do we word this...]

It's... Mostly church work?

[Which doesn't answer anything, does it?]

So, like... charity work? Or preaching or something.

[She's thinking this over because she doesn't really know how the church works. Shrines and monasteries, maybe. Churches, eh.]

Unless your High Priest is weird about that too?

Well, the church was more or less the government where I was raised. Each of the city's districts of Shelgard was run by a different branch of the church, with each representing one of the six elements. The Gracia Church where I was raised was dedicated to the element of Dusk. But Dusk is a really dangerous element, and a lot of things need to be sealed and kept out of people's hands due to the threat they hold.

The job of people like me was to make sure they stay sealed up inside the church, more or less.

It sounds like you're a bit like a miko -- that's a priestess at one of our shrines who takes care of the shrines and their gods. It sounds a lot more dangerous, though... Did you guys have to fight?

[All that hullabaloo about war children did stick with her.]

Well... Yes. Heretics stole some of those sealed things, and wanted to do some really bad things with them, so it was our job to find them and stop them. That's what we had to do for our treatment.

...Actually, that was the only reason they were willing to treat us in the first place. The treatment made us more resistant to Dusk than most people, so we were the best way to find and deal with them safely.

So it was like hitting two birds with one stone...

[There is so much child labor all up in this resort, you guys. She's definitely side-eyeing it, though they're currently in much worse circumstances than that even -- but it's distracted by the sheer strangeness of what Ellie is describing.]

The Star Children you described, did they have that job, too?

[So it's almost like having two jobs, on Ellie's part...]

No, it's a bit different there. Everyone with a Star Brand -- oh, that's this thing here on my hand --

[She'll just show off the weird tattoo on her hand.]

-- gets the ability to fight Dusk Monsters. I think I mentioned that before, but basically, without this, you can't fight Dusk Monsters at all, and it's only there between the ages of 16 and 18. As such, everyone that gets a Star Brand is more or less assigned to helping deal with the Dusk Monsters.

As such, I was actually told that my job as Inquisitor isn't quite as high a priority for the time being, though once all the Dusk Circles are taken care of, I'll probably be reassigned back to Inquisitor work. I kind of prefer fighting Dusk Monsters, personally, but I go where my job takes me.
