Week 4

It finally happened. Someone murdered, and was punished for it. After a particularly grueling trial, one much worse than the games ever were, everyone definitely needed the rest of the weekend to rest up. But now it is Monday once more, and that means it is time to get back to 'work'.

The cameras have moved again, and the contestants will need to be careful where they say what until their new locations have been revealed. In addition to that, the house itself seems to have changed, with its usual colorful appearance suddenly a bit more grey. Even the weather seems to be gloomy, with those storm clouds from last week starting to overcast the area, threatening to drop rain.

Seventeen contestants remain in this game of death. How many more will fall before the game is over? And how many more will be driven to murder?

Well I mean, you know how I am, so kissing was kind of... out of the question. Though Yoshi has kissed me a few times, so... I'm getting better?

[She nods, smiling at the last part. Aww.]

Yoshi? Is that your boyfriend?

Yeah, Yoshi is... We were part of the Hotel investigation together, and that's basically how we met. There a bit of an accident involving Amnestics and we actually forgot we were part of the Foundation altogether for a while, but... Honestly, I think it worked out? I'm not sure we would have ended up together if we hadn't had that accident.

[So Ellie has someone... That's cute!]

You don't? Why not?

...Actually, the timing for that mission was... Kind of bad. A little bit before that, I found out that I was part of the Foundation's list to... continue my job as an Inquisitor, and wound up losing a few friends as a result. I thought if I had to keep doing this kind of job, it would be better if I didn't get close to anyone.

Ahh... Inquisitor is kind of a special role in the Gracia Church, and those who take the role are trained for it since they're children. As for what they do...

...The Gracia Church presides over the element of Dusk, which rules over desire, and the mind. While there are many positive applications of it... Overuse of it is extremely dangerous, and some ways people can use Dusk can be extremely dangerous. As such, part of the job of the Gracia Church is to research ways it could be abused and how to counter said ways. But sometimes, powerful people in the Dusk Church decide to use those techniques for bad things. The job of Inquisitors is to find the people that do such things and... make sure they're stopped, no matter what.

Yeah, she knows enough to be wary of words like that.]

As children, though... Why would they make children do that?

...Resistance to Dusk is rare on my world, and with Dusk's ability to allow someone who abuses its power to control people, only someone with resistance to Dusk energy could possibly perform the role.

The most practical method the Gracia Church found was the Stillblood Ritual, but it wasn't exactly something that could be used on just anyone. It could only be performed on people who fit into a very narrow set of requirements: A recently deceased child with a high capacity for star energy, and a strong enough desire to live that not only do their souls continue to exist after death, but are also strong enough mentally to withstand any amount of pain to survive.

The Stillblood ritual is incredibly painful, after all. It's said to be "painful enough to make people wish they were dead".

It's not like they sent us out as children, though. We spent a lot of time training so that we could infiltrate places and not seem too out of place, after all.

[It's... horrible.]

You had to go through all of that?

[duskhound]

Well, let's just say that even if I'm a shrimp, I'm actually pretty sturdy. It's not like they surprised us with this stuff, though. They told us outright that we would get a second chance to live, but that's the price that needs to be paid. After all, all of us were already dead by the time the Gracia Church got us.

Still, that's how important getting a second chance at life was to us. And... Honestly, being brought here to this world where I can actually have a proper chance at living is a miracle by itself, even if the Foundation isn't exactly friendly.

[She still looks extremely concerned, but she's a bit mollified by Ellie's explanation of her life now.]

...I'm glad it's gotten better. [Even though that bar seems incredibly low.] I hope you've been able to enjoy yourself sometimes in spite of everything.

Don't worry about me, I've been able to enjoy myself, yes. After all, before the Foundation, I hadn't tasted anything in over a decade. Being able to actually know what something tastes like is still pretty new to me.

Have you been trying out all kinds of foods, at least?

[duskhound]

I have been. I still kind of prefer sweet foods, but I have been trying to mix things up a bit. A friend of mine really liked making things really salty, too.

...I would like to refuse having Akira's health hazard that he calls curry, though.

[Look, that thing's scent alone was a weapon.]

I couldn't handle that, either. But if you'd like, I can try making something for you, too.
