WEEK 5 MINGLE

They said it was a break week, but two of your number were lost anyway last week. While you're all tired and still recovering, the speakers crackle to life with the voice of The Lady.
"Attention, Guests. The game is back on. Break week is now over. Happy Holidays."
The Staff are still like they were last week - only this time, the orders almost always go wrong, if they even manage to go through - the Staff are vanishing constantly. Meals are also getting affected - they're still perfectly edible, but they're not as delicious as they once were, with seasoning and other things occasionally being off. The Sign warning people to not take knives is still on the kitchen door, but The Chef seems incredibly tired, often resting on a chair in the corner.
The Resort is still furnished with Holiday items - but after Medic's christmas protest, there are more items related to other holidays up, and it's much more balanced - objects and colors of multiple holidays side by side in harmony, with the mistletoe still up for any needed smooching. There are, however, more wriggling...things, and there's even an entire 'tree' made of eldritch tentacles with glowing balls of light on them that wink in an oddly hypnotic fashion.
The weather is still nothing, but the courtyard seems to have switched to a much warmer clime, which while still a little cool is pleasant enough to sit outside in. Finally, the music this week seems... almost ominous...?
On Monday morning, another memory is returned to everyone, one more traumatic this time instead of gentle like the others have been. Yet, you feel as if you know a little more about your time in this world, now. Not everything, but...enough.
Enough to see this game through to the end, at least.

Who the fuck let a guy like this be in charge of a goddamn company?! And be heterosexual? [A pause.] Right. Your world is absolutely batshit.
...Wait, yetis exist?! What the fuck? How did I completely miss that?

or at least he was. he did have to step down as ceo after he refused to punch a child
[Tf2 canon- just about everything's on-limits except hurting kids]
also his company manufactured most of our teams' weapons. Engineer and I made most of ours ourselves, though. but his company helped design the respawn system
they did! and then he punched the last one to death. and then made us fight each other in the park he built for yeti-punching purposes
that was a fun few months!

I honestly can't tell if you're making this shit up or not.
[She shakes her head, running a hand through her hair.]
At least you don't have to worry about dying back home. And it's not as depressing as the capitalistic hellscape that is Earth and all of its subsequent colonies. [A pause.] Does Australia have capitalism? It must, right? If he runs a private business.
i love that its nearly impossible to make up smth too ridiculous to fit tf2 canon
Well, that's debatable- respawn isn't wildly available and usually only set up on the battlefield, so only those of us on either team can access it- and only while within range AND while the device is set up. After Saxton Hale stepped down, respawn was taken down for us :/
The team I joined after that had their own version of respawn, but I disabled it once I had the chance. It left me capable of dying properly, but that didn't turn out to be a huge problem for me
oh, and Australia is EXTREMELY capitalist, unfortunately

So...like...a video game, almost. Interesting. Almost like the cloning technology some places have to protect the bigwigs in the company and stuff.
[Unfortunately, capitalism. She wrinkles her nose a little at what Medic says about Australia ]
Who's this Engineer person you mentioned before? Seems like a pretty smart guy, if he was able to manufacture his own weapons.
no subject
but i'll take your word for it
oh, right- did i tell you we have clones?
i feel like i told you we have clones. ive killed my own clone like a million times and hes done the same to me
Engie is one of my teammates and a good friend. he's incredible, really. one of the cleverest men I know. Soft-spoken Southern type, but tenacious and absolutely vicious if you get on his bad side. he can build a functioning turret gun from scrap metal within minutes and upgrade it to shoot rockets with a bit of time :)
we've shared lab spaces in some of our bases, and we work together rather well!

[She raises an eyebrow at what he says about his teammate, smiling softly.]
Sounds like you guys have been through a lot. I mean--Engineer and your other teammates, that is. How many other mercenaries do you usually work with?
[She can relate. A lot of times being stationed on a cargo ship means establishing close friendships with your crewmates.]
no subject
we've worked together for many years. I trust them with my life. And they trust me- they're the first people I ever knew who really did trust me! which isn't something I take lightly.
no subject
I understand. Being able to work so closely with the people that you've learned to trust over the years, having--holy shit is that a whale shark?!
[She presses her hands against the glass, wide-eyed and completely ignoring the sticky note in her hand.]
Holy shit, that thing is fucking huge! Alex would lose her goddamn mind at this!
no subject
He's also not replying anything because he also has his face and hands pressed against the glass.]

Ripley grins, tapping her left hand against the glass.]
Man, I never thought I'd see one of these up close. Especially in this...weird...resort thing. [She shakes her head.] One day, I'll tell you what I know about weird sea animals--my wife used to want a huge fish tank.
[Has she told him that??? She feels like he told him that.]

Engie and Pyro were both big on fishkeeping, as well; never could set anything up, either. We'd occasionally have to move bases without much warning, and it's hard to uproot an entire tank of fish and get them set up elsewhere within 24 hours. Especially since we could be at a new base for anywhere between a week and a year at a time.
They didn't mind much, though. Engineer got a canary from a relative who could no longer care for it; Pyro started keeping insects.
Anyway- Pyro especially knows plenty about weird sea life. I'll have to compare notes between them and your wife.

[She snorts, peeling herself away from the glass and crossing her arms. She's careful not to touch the wound on her forearm.]
Do every one of your teammates have some sort of fascination with animals? They seem a lot more willing to deal with them than my crewmates, at least--Brett hated dealing with Jonesy for more than five minutes at a time.

Soldier has his raccoons and the eagles, Heavy has the robin and his family's chickens back home, Spy has a snake and is also partial to cats, Scout's mother has a cockatiel that he helps care for and did have that squirrel once that Soldier gave him, I think Pyro got a dog recently, Engie's family farm back in Texas has quite a few animals- horses and livestock, mostly-, Demo takes care of cats at the kitten orphanage and has a parrot from Soldier, Sniper has... god, I don't even want to try and think of all the animals he picks up.
