TRIAL

The morning seemed so far away yesterday - yet, it also seems too soon when morning comes and you are all yet again ushered to the third floor by The Lady. The Captain is there, in all of his....wait, no, he's asleep.

The doors close, and...nothing happens. There's still the box labeled 'VOTES' in his lap on the couch, but...

On the table is a letter, that reads 'Only one person may be voted for execution this week. Please figure out who that will be during the time limit.'

As you finish reading that, music begins to play in the room...

Iwai wasn't just a distraction.

He was revenge.

[justfists]

[she pauses and... taps a finger to her lips in thought]

We may have revealed the barghest last trial, but don't you think it strange it singled you and myself out, Akira? It took very specific pains to make that point.

When it knew it wouldn't die.

Perhaps it was revenge, but... revenge can be distracting, can't it?

[purrtagonist]

I thought it singled us out because we were the ones that outed it, actually.

[justfists]

[she pauses, and then tilts her head in thought.]

But it knew this was just a minor setback, didn't it? And it still didn't target either of us this week.

[purrtagonist]

No. It targeted Iwai instead.

I don't know why it went after him instead of us.

[justfists]

[judging by the suspicion on the both of them?]

... I have a guess.

[purrtagonist]

What's your guess?

[he wonders if it's the same as his]

[justfists]

... Whoever it is wanted to cast suspicion on us.

[she looks furious, now that she says it out loud]

[purrtagonist]

That-- [aha]

I wasn't even thinking along those lines.

[he was just thinking along the revenge angle]

[justfists]

This is what I meant by the distraction point.

If the monsters didn't believe your gambit, then upon being caught, wouldn't it make sense for the Barghest to focus on us? You'd already made yourself the biggest target at trial on purpose.

[purrtagonist]

I did.

[and he's still reeling that he somehow got skipped over in favor of Iwai, Inaba and Shirou]

[but maybe she's right? maybe the mafia purposefully left him alive to scapegoat him?]

[duskhound]

...That still doesn't make sense. Even if they believed that Akira wasn't the Seeker, he'd proven to most of us that he was. Unless the real seeker died, there would be no reason to suspect him.

So we still end up with the problem that they somehow knew who the Seeker was.

[justfists]

[she shakes her head.]

Why would the seeker reveal himself so publicly?

Our hope was that they believed Akira was the Seeker, but that was a risk Akira took without asking anyone. [pointedly]

And now, suspiciously, everyone targeted points at him.

[duskhound]

The only reason he's suspicious at all is because the Seeker died, though. The fact was, he exposed a member of the Mafia, so there wasn't any reason to believe he wasn't the Seeker, beyond the fact that he threw himself into danger by revealing himself, and even that could be explained by him knowing something the rest of us don't.

[justfists]

... Exactly.

It would prove he knew who the seeker was.
