I still don't know that I believe it counts as 'cheating.' That implies there's a set rule we're knowingly breaking, and it's never said that we can't just ask. So... I think we ought to try it.

It's probably implied the same sense that a culprit could not confess to the murders during the Winchester Incident. Asking it to say who did it without us presenting the evidence and accusing them would be the equivalent of them confessing.

Or that is what I believe their line of logic will be.
