The trick is figuring out what the overarching 'rules' are.

Knox's Decalogue and Van Dine's Commandments are often held as gold standards for fair play mysteries. However, it doesn't mean you can't make a solvable mystery if you violate them - You just need to understand why the rules exist, or what you are doing.
