WEEK 2

With the nature of this 'game' out, the resort might not look so welcoming anymore. The staff are still ready to jump in and serve guests in any way they can, provided a request doesn't make them short-circuit, and the resort itself seems as warm and cheery as usual. But everyone knows the truth now. This resort is hiding some pretty big secrets, and it's only a matter of time before someone else turns up dead.

The weather is holding steady, at 'cold but still safe for outdoor activities'. The temperature seems to be dipping lower each day, though, and the previously-blue sky is starting to stay grey more often than not. Could that signal an approaching snowstorm? Who know. There is still music playing in the halls, and the cover songs continue with some low-key music for the week.

On Monday morning, another memory is returned to everyone. Another piece to the puzzle, one step closer to finding the truth of this place. But it might not be enough to put everything together yet, that might take some more time.

Most importantly, everyone needs to get to know each other. This 'game' is one of 'know your enemies', and your very survival depends on knowing when someone is acting odd.

Nicknames, huh? Where did "Buttercup" and "Timeless" come from, anyway?

[ Inaba takes out the tablet and points at it. ]

It's the ones that are on the profiles, actually. And the ones that the staff members call everyone...

Oh, good point. I haven't looked back at those in a while.

[She's learned some of the ins and outs of likes and dislikes and people she commonly talks to, but she forgets nicknames because calling people by their given names is more her speed.]

I keep an eye on it myself, but I wouldn't call people by those weird nicknames. They just seem... impersonal?

Well, mine is just the name of my avatar, but I don't think a lot of the nicknames are usually things that those people are called... At least, I hope not.

[Mr. Garbo-Trash gets a glance here. Some other more mundane nicknames might be things connected to their owner too, but she hasn't really asked around so far.]

Yeah, mine is pretty normal too, since it's the nickname that... [ She hesitates, just a second. ] That a friend gave me. And I sure fucking hope not. Nanase doesn't really deserve that sort of nickname.

[Right, she vaguely remembers discussing that nickname and its connection to Inaba's real name at some point between the blizzard and the mafia game. It feels like a while ago.]

Yeah. That's why I made him give me something else to call him. There's also a few names you can hear the staff screaming from across the resort... I really don't get it.

[Those are actually kind of hilarious, but still.]

. . . I think it's supposed to be a joke.

They're pretty dedicated to the weirdest things.

I mean, they're probably not human, so. Not surprising?

Whoever programmed them had a sense of humor, I guess.

[Is this a good thing?? She's still talking about them like they're AI.]

That's some sense of humor.

What, you didn't think the wild swings from gags to murders was funny?

I don't know why whoever it was picked that for me.

Actually, it might just be because they're an asshole.

Really? You're "Timeless", right?

[Buttercup just seems like a very Anthy sort of name.

Neither of them seem that bad, but who knows. It sounds like there's a story here.]

I'm Hunter, actually.

[But that's just him being pedantic, and he knows it. As sore as he is about the nickname, he knows it's not her fault, so he just sighs.]

But that's what they're calling me, yeah.

Don't worry, I usually don't call people by nickname.

[Unless she's expressly asked to, which hasn't happened yet. The nicknames really aren't helpful in the slightest, she thinks.]

I wonder if there's a reason the letter-writer used the nicknames, though? It's not like they were trying to hide your identity...

The staff only call us by those nicknames, right? Maybe...

[He frowns.]

Maybe they're one of the people who work here?

If they work here... would they be part of the game?

[That's something she has admittedly not devoted too much thinking time to. The staff are so nondescript and the Lady always vanishes. Most of the time, it seems like guests are left on their own. So it's natural to think of their hosts are mere hosts of the game. But...?]

We could probably ask the staff that, at least.

I don't know, but I can't think of anyone else who only calls us by our titles.

[He frowns.]

Maybe one of them is going rogue, or something.

A staff going rogue...?

[Is there even anything there to go rogue. She's not sure! But...]

Well, apparently at one point they were kind of normal people? Just normal people taking care of a bunch of weird youkai and stuff at this resort.

[wrongtiming]

Maybe one of them is reverting to that? Or, like... Growing a conscience or something?

[Or maybe he's watched too many sci-fi movies.]

I feel like the reverting makes more sense. Have you seen the insides of one of those guys? It's just a total void, it's creepy.

[It's almost more creepy than being able to take chunks out of themselves all of a sudden.]

[There's a pause, before...]

Uh, how do you know what it looks like inside of them?

[She... just looks kind of grouchy?]

Don't get the wrong idea. I ran into Granz-san and Kohaku-kun doing some pretty gross experiments on the staff, to the point where they decided to ask for a chunk of them? It turned out they were getting fake materials all along, but the staff I think... actually took a chunk out. We could all see it.

[It is not a good memory!! Useful, but not good.]
