Things had changed so rapidly in the past few days.

The loss of two of them hung over like a shroud, made even worse by the fact that an innocent person had been executed.

Was this....how the rest of the game was going to go...?🗈

....Even if it was, there wasn't much they could do now. Yuuko herself hasn't shown up in public since the trial, and while some have talked to her, she's been...subdued.

Did the trial hurt her just as much as them?

Regardless, the island is still beautiful, if deadly. Summer continues, beaming down on all of them, the waves of the sea warm and inviting.

But even if things look bleak...

They have something in their hands that will soon lead to the Truth, and the heart of this matter.

And in the air...lies a heavy sense that everything is about to change.

I was wondering if you've written to the other witch at all, actually. I'm... trying to see if anybody knows any information about them, personally.

I haven't attempted communication with either of them. I don't trust whatever they might tell us, considering the nature of this game they're playing with us.

[There's a trace of something cold and hard in Erhard's voice.]

Life is sacred. They have no right to do this.

I see. [ He says that with a bit of a heavy sigh, quiet. ] It's true that they both might not tell us anything, or even the truth. This game isn't one that should continue like this, but... I don't think that the one I've been writing to is a bad person.

If that's true, why agree to a competition that puts our lives at risk, not theirs? We're people, not pieces.

I assume you don't believe what was written in the letter that we got on Monday, do you. [ It's a half-hearted question. ] And the term 'pieces'... might just be something that they use in this world, as witches.

[cryosurgeon]

I'm approaching everything about this with at least a degree of skepticism. It's very easy to lie on paper, when we can't hear inflection in a voice or see body language. And there are others who can lie convincingly to observers. The other witch needs us to fight against Yuuko, if the pieces refuse to play then they have no game.

That might be true. And it might be naive of me to believe so. But I believe what they have told me thus far.

I don't expect anyone to be swayed by my suspicions. If someone agrees with me, fine. If not, that's fine as well.

[He's used to being alone, after all.]

My only concern is that no one else gets hurt.

My apologies. I just... have my own personal reasons for trusting them. If they really are trying to trick me and are lying to me, then... [...] I'll take the consequences of that. I don't want anyone else hurt as much as the next.
