FINAL TRIAL

After a very, very long six weeks, it has finally come. The last time everyone will need to trudge up those stairs and meet in the master suite. It's do or die time, and hopefully everyone knows what needs to be done by now.
As soon as the guests walk into the room, they will be able to smell the food that the chef has provided: duck l'orange, served up on a nice platter. Eat up everyone!
There are a few unexpected guests this time. A large group of the rats is here, and they show up in a swarm as they carry Gabe into the room, much like how they had carted him off to the Child Daycare last night. Once he is deposited in the room, Gabe will also stand up and remain there, crossing his arm and looking a bit standoffish.
They're not the only unexpected faces around here, though...

[he looks at the Lady, smiling]
I myself must return, as much as I'd love to stay. There is much work to be done, yet. But I will be back! There is still so much "research" to be done here!

You're... you're offering us freedom.
[ His voice may be shaking a little. He hasn't been free in so many years. ]

The choice is yours to make, Kohaku. I think everyone here has earned the right to make that choice for themselves.

[ .... which is all pretty wow. ]

You'll be our boss in the future as well. If I go back... are you going to let me touch instruments or is this going to be a 'shot on attempt' deal once again?

You doing okay over there? Boss guys don't make accommodations like this. You're gonna get kicked out for being too nice at this rate.

Don't test me! I've.. just had a bit of a change of heart, is all. If you question it too much I will rescind my offer!!
no subject
[ Hands at his side immediately, perfectly behaved! He's grinning at the reaction though. And also at the offer, let's be real. ]
Guess I'm at your service once more, boss.

Well then. Welcome back to the Foundation, Agent Kohaku.

[Now...there's a thought.]
Willing to extend that to two more?

[he seems open to just about anything right now, at least]

It'd be much harder to get done if we've both got the Foundation keeping an eye out for us.
[If you catch his drift, Szayel...]

[he leans in close, whispering in Snake's ear. He'll feel some sort of small... buzz? What could that possibly be? It isn't painful, though...]
I recommend you do not move against the Foundation, though, Snake. It is not an entity you can take down from the outside.
[The buzz vanishes and Szayel says no more on that particular subject]
no subject
But...his mind is made.]
Sounds like a challenge.

Either way, it seems Snake's mind is made up]
I can't protect you if you leave. Ahh... I will miss my expert dog trainer, though.
no subject
[He has, at some point, lived a pre-Szayel life.]
I can leave you some tips. Or a frequency, if you ever need advice.
...I want to know how he's growing up, besides.
no subject
... I would appreciate that. And I'm sure Duke would too.

There is definitely some relief in her face at the pronouncement, though it returns to worry while she's watching the others make their decisions. There's... a lot at stake here, and yet very little, because she's come to know these people too well.
She probably won't be any better at staying on the sidelines this time than she was the last time. Back home, a lifetime ago.]
