RECORDING 15: THE FIFTH TRIAL.

The worst has happened... and now you're all here, in the living room where all the trials so far have taken place. As all of you enter, the Vessel is there - Ango, standing as firm and unyielding as ever, waiting for the time when the trial is scheduled to begin.
On one of the tables away from the center is a small enclosed box entitled 'VOTES', with slips of paper nearby and a pen. It's sufficiently away from what will be the 'main' action, but not enough to really give anyone complete privacy as they vote.
Once everyone is inside, the doors automatically shut and lock themselves, leaving you trapped in here with the Vessel...and each other.
One of you is a murderer...however, in this game, the guilty do not need to be voted out. As long as there are enough people voted out that matches the victims...then it will be accepted.
...But, can you really let someone get away with murder...?
The choice is up to you.

but he doesn’t.
instead he takes a deep breath, and nods. ]
We can probably make a timeline of things, then. Battler entered the Conservatory and was shot in the left lung. He continued trying to advance forward despite it and made it close to the fern, because a shot to the lung isn’t fatal. Then, he was shot again in the other lung and, finally, a point blank shot to the heart that finally killed him. [ .... ] The chess pieces are a message, too. Something like a declaration of victory.

It looked more like Battler was closer to the chess board before he fell and tried to move away from it. The board and table were likely knocked over in his initial fall. But because his lung was collapsing and filling with blood, he didn't get very far.
Then came the additional two shots.
I do agree the chess pieces are a message, but it's not a victory: it's likely a warning. Check is not checkmate. "I've removed your bishop, what now?" is the message that can be read. "Your move," is another.

[ says the man that had a nervous breakdown less than 24 hours ago. ]
But if you think that it is a mockery, the question is 'what is it mocking' or 'who is it mocking'? It's not Battler they were mocking, if you ask me--if that were the case, he would have been the 'king' and not the 'bishop'. It's someone that they were close to...perhaps.

The trouble is, a king can only move one space on the board. Any direction, but only one space.
A bishop, on the other hand, is a powerful piece that is potentially second only to the queen. The queen can move in any direction for as far as she'd like. A bishop, however, moves only on the diagonal as far as he'd like.
Removing a bishop from play is removing a large safety net from the king.

[haha, he's trying hard not to take it all personally but uh. hard not to.]

What are we going to do with you, hmm?

... that's my bias, however.
The other option for the white king... would be Tages.

This book is one of Agatha Christie's...Battler had brought one of her books here, actually. And Then There Were None.

no. instead--]
Why would he use a page from a book he enjoyed instead of borrowing from Hitoka's notebook?

Maybe someone used that as a lure?
