[There's a brief laugh, especially if Sissel literally turned up his nose -- Subete is probably not a cat person? But there's still something really funny about talking to a cat and seeing it react to your words in real time when you know it can understand you. Despite all of his considerable and ridiculous experience with life and the Foundation, it's something novel.

Well, yes. Ice is water in a solid state -- but the important part is that ice is a good way of holding items in stasis. That way, the liquid water won't damage the inks and pages, and fungi and mold can't grow on the pages, either. You can just let it dry while frozen, too.
