thefoundation | RECORDING 7: THE THIRD WEEK.

A third week in this place begins, with less of your number among you. The final week completely covered by everyone's rations, though with proper meting out, you'll be able to make it stretch until after week 4. It seems as if everyone will have to go without a few meals here and there..

To make things worse, when you wake up - it's clear the Miasma has gotten thicker. Everyone, save those still protected either by their powers or items they brought with them, is now even more deeply affected by the curse. Arguments will be flaring up more, along with negative thoughts and feelings...and even more worrying Is that any magic that touches the house itself will corrode over time. If a barrier is put in place and touches the floor, walls, or ceiling, in half a day it will be completely consumed by the miasma and fizzle out. Spells or seals will also corrode, and even personal healing abilities have been halved.

The Temperature has dropped, just a bit - down to the mid to low 60's. Strange, isn't it? As before,the rooms have changed, so hopefully you kept anything essential in the static area.

The book? [Indeed, his gaze does slide over to the book cautiously, as if to confirm that there's nothing wrong with it, but... it looks normal, even if the subject matter is decidedly not.]

Why?

The last time I left something like that open- [ He exhales and when he speaks again, it's more steady. ] Nevermind, it's probably fine here like everything else.

[Honestly, he's chalking a lot of this up to Hikage being disoriented and confused by the whole thing, so admittedly he's not taking his mumblings as seriously as he could be. It'd be one thing if there was an obvious trap here, but...]

Right. I doubt we'll find a ghost appearing out of it or anything. [So while he'll spare one last glance at the book, he'll leave it as he turns to Hikage.]

Let's get to one of the washrooms.

[ A reasonable assumption to make, and this mansion despite all its traps and unfriendly ghosts tends to follow a certain type of pattern, a cursed book not being one of them. At least yet anyway, and hey what's the worst that could happen?

He'll follow behind Date, injured hand at his side and his other buried in his hair. His right eye is still red. ]

I made a mistake...I didn't think it would break like this. Not when it held up all this time, even after Saturday...

[The eye still being red is sort of strange and concerning, but as long as it's not actively dangerous for it to be like that, he'll pay it no mind for the moment. He's not even sure what else he could do besides tell Hikage. And besides, what's being said seems pretty important, too.]

A mistake? What kind of mistake would do something like that?

I thought I could jog my memory if I went through the books here. I was just skimming, trying to see if anything would jump out at me and all of a sudden it was like...my head was going to split open and then my bracelet shattered. I should have noticed that the stone in it was tarnished, and I should have known better than to pursue something like this after last weekend.

[ From the sounds of it he's not really clear what or who is it at fault, but it's easy to blame himself. ]

[It was apparent when they talked about his cell phone that Hikage's lack of memories bothered him, but... honestly, it feels like the desperation shows all the more now. With that said, the connections between what he's saying don't quite mesh together in a way that makes complete sense to Date, but if it has to do with miasma somehow, one thing seems clear.]

I don't think you trying to remember your past is what caused this. If it was something about the miasma, then maybe the stone just couldn't hold inside anymore.

...that's still my fault, isn't it? I could have asked someone to look at it after last weekend. Seteth, or Gilgamesh, or even Marona...

[ It's clear he's still pretty out of it, his voice wavering even if he's managed to drag himself back to the present. ]

[It's strange, seeing Hikage like this. Even if it was obvious that there was more to him than his typical cool-headed front, it doesn't change the fact that it's an oddly vulnerable moment to find him in. So he speaks slowly and clearly to make sure he's heard.]

...No, I don't think it is. You can't predict everything. If you could, I doubt we'd be in this mess to begin with.

[ It helps, and it helps to keep moving rather than get stuck both literally and metaphorically. ]

...that really would be too convenient, huh? [ A bitter smile. ] That's what the Foundation called my ability actually, clairvoyance. But seeing into the past isn't that convenient a power in any way you look at it.

[Thankfully, they're also getting closer to the bathroom so they can also cross one of the other problems off their list when they get there.]

Maybe we could trade, then. My eye for your clairvoyance.

[It's said a little lighter than it probably should be considering the context, but he has to admit that something like that would be useful for investigating crime scenes.]

But you're right. It can't change what actually happened.

You haven't told me all your eye can do aside from house a hamster. [ This absolutely isn't the time to be talking so lightly but he goes along with it pretty easily. ]

And the past is sometimes just a terrible reminder. [ Week Four says hi. ]

Maybe another time. I like to keep a few tricks up my sleeve, for when the time is right. [There's a brief smile here, before his expression returns to something more thoughtful.]

...It can be. But sometimes even terrible reminders can teach you the value of something important.

I can't blame you for that. [ And speaking of blame, they've managed to reach the bathroom without any more self-blame on Hikage's part so victory! He's a little more aware now of his surroundings now, so he makes his way over to the sink but stares at it a bit upon seeing how much of a mess he is in the mirror.

Belatedly he adds, mumbled: ]

I'm not sure I would even be able to recognize it any more.

[Hurray, at least they've gotten here without any incident, which is sort of something to be celebrated in this place considering all the traps. He'll look into the cabinet to pull out a pair of tweezers for any fragments of glass, although there's a pause and glance over at Hikage when he speaks.]

...What do you mean?

What's important to me. [ It's almost a whisper, but he takes a breath and speaks a little clearer when he starts again. ]

I didn't recognize my twin brother on my own, so if I was to come across something else that should have meaning to me...I might not recognize that either.

["It feels like... I've met you before."

...]

But you were able to recognize him eventually. Even if you needed some help, you were still able to do it, right?

...yeah. But it's been so long... [ Again his voice sways, tinged with uncharacteristic emotion. His hands grip the sides of the sink, eyes focused straight ahead on his reflection, some blood running down his wrist again from the pressure. ]

[Okay yeah, this isn't good, especially since there might still be some glass bits stuck in his palm. So, Date's going to try and gently tug at the bloody wrist to try and get Hikage to loosen his grip.]

Hey, you're gonna hurt yourself more that way.

[ He jumps a bit, but the touch helps and he lets go of the sink. ]

R-right, sorry. It's just...hard to keep things straight, sometimes.
