Round 5 Test Drive Meme





Welcome to the Winchester Mansion!

The Winchester Mansion is a lovely historical building, situated in San Jose, California. Ground broke on the site in 1884, but construction didn't finish until 1922. Actually, construction technically never 'finished', it just stopped one day. This sprawling mansion boasts 161 rooms, which includes 40 bedrooms, 2 ballrooms, numerous bathrooms, sitting rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, and many other oddities! It also has 47 fireplaces, over 10,000 panes of glass, 17 chimneys, two basement levels and three elevators. This massive house is the life's project of Sarah Winchester, who believed that the ghosts of those murdered by her husband's rifles would hunt her down if construction ever stopped on the house. As a result, construction occurred around the clock for nearly forty years, up until the widow's death.

Such a strange tale of supernatural beliefs, right? It's a good thing that ghost stories aren't real, or else it might make the mansion unnerving! In reality, the Winchester mansion is no more than a tale of paranoia gone wrong, and multiple earthquakes have left the building unsafe to tour or even explore.

...at least, that's what normal people are told. Foundation Agents, on the other hand, are given the real story: Sarah Winchester's paranoia may have been warranted, as unexplained activity over the last century has pointed to the presence of an Euclid-level SCP residing somewhere in the house. Recently activity has increased, and a high-ranking Agent has gone missing in the area. So, a team of Agents has been sent in to investigate the scene, record data on the SCP, and hopefully recover the missing Agent.

So. Do you believe in ghost stories? Because you're in one.




Setting up camp

No investigation can begin without proper setup! Luckily a safe area has been set aside for Agents to use as a base camp just outside of the house, as proper investigation inside will have to wait until the Foundation decides which Agents will go in. Sure, they can come and go as they please, but it's easier for them to investigate if they stay on site, right? It's better if the locals don't see Agents coming and going all the time anyway. Even with the cover of 'a renovation company looking to restore the mansion', they still have to keep some privacy! After all, not all Agents are completely human, and it might be hard to explain away a dog in a suit or something.

There aren't any go-fers to help with setting up the base camp either. Agents have to carry all of the gear in: the cameras, the food supplies, the clothes, the equipment, everything. And then they have to set it up.

Hope you guys can work in teams, because it's going to be a long day.



Setting up Equipment

Once everything's all settled in the safe area, a couple of you are sent towards the Hayes Mansion with a couple miles of electrical cords and lines to be spread out in areas where it won't be spotted by curious civilians.

However, once you make it to the Hotel, you'll be kindly greeted by the staff, who'll usher you into a Staff entrance and ask for your help in setting up the recording equipment, as the Hayes Mansion also functions as a secondary Containment Site for those SCPs that can be easily contained away from people.

The Staff will allow you to stay at the hotel for a few hours, and give you access to a room or any of it's entertainment or dining areas in exchange. The Staff will always be very friendly, though they seem to all know the same things (to a point) and all their facial features are hard to remember - they have faces that seem to slide right out of your memory.

In fact, it's kind of like the Hayes Mansion might be a big SCP in of itself...? Oh well. That's not really your problem, is it? For now, enjoy what little luxury you get before having to go back to base camp.



Meet and Greet

Everybody present is on their first mission for the Foundation, and everyone has been 'recently created' by another SCP, though everyone's gone through the requisite month or two of Agent training. With memories of a home far away from here, it might be difficult to settle in to life as an Agent. But maybe some introductions over dinner will help with that? One of the Agents helpfully brought a bunch of those "HI! My name is ___" stickers and some sharpies, so everyone can fill out one of those and stick them on. Hopefully there's no I.C. Wieners in the group.



Camp Fun and Games

Unfortunately, it's taking forever for The Foundation to decide which of the 6350's here should go on the mission - and it's boring just sitting around and waiting in front of an old house in tents in April, eating rations and twiddling your thumbs.

So it should come as no surprise when some people start dragging out the small entertainment they smuggled on the mission with them - cards, of course, and maybe even a board game or other kinds of entertainment get dragged out, depending on powers. Though there are also other sorts of things to keep busy - not all games require physical objects, like 'The Floor is Lava' or 'Truth or Dare' or even 'Tag', if you get really desperate. Maybe the more inventive among you manage to put a bunch of rocks together in a pleasing sculpture! ...Or maybe some of you go dumpster diving for whatever high quality trash people throw out around here. It's your life.


Something Spooky This Way Comes

As it gets closer to the 11th - and rumors that decisions are finally getting made go out around the camp - noises begin to be able to be heard from inside the house itself. Something that sounds like soft, despairing sobbing...It goes quiet from time to time, but the noise itself sounds like a child in distress - not an easy thing for most people to hear. Yet, going near the house or looking into the windows will reveal that there's nothing inside...

Another thing that's beginning to happen is the occasional small black fog clouds that pop in and out of existence around them. They seem harmless, and anything sufficiently 'purifying' can easily make them go away, but...touching one leads to a minor rush of negative emotions, or a snippet of a horrible memory plays out in your mind's eye. The fog seems to like to stick to tents or equipment, only dissipating once someone's touched it.

Maybe this might be a little worse than what everyone was expecting after all...

This test drive takes place during April 1st through April 10th of the year 2000. This test drive meme is considered canon for the game. All characters present on the test drive meme who are not apped into round 5 will be spirited away at the start of round 5 and never heard from again.

1) re: something spooky this way comes, for someone who is more spiritually inclined, will they sense anything, hear anything, etc

2) and also........ Sakura has the ability to understand the sensations/feelings/emotions of all living and non-living things. basically. are there any plants/a fireplace/winds she can talk to and how would they respond

3) also given that the tdm does take place during april 1st - 10th ICly i also. . . have to ask this: would it be possible for Sakura to have any prophetic dreams or nah? would there be anything - even vague - in particular that she'd see?

4) would characters get more information re: the high-ranking Agent if asked? because i'm playing someone who would ask to see more about the missing Agent

[It’s odd, you’d think Akira would be easy to pick out of the group- considering he’s wearing the black version of the Foundation uniform with a goddamn black scarf and a freaking katana alongside the normal gear. But almost like the Hotel staff one’s eyes kinda seem to slide off his face, though not to their extreme. Maybe he’s just that average-looking?

Still, maybe all that black is a bad idea when hauling things, because he has to stop and mop up the sweat on his face every few trips. At least he’s a tireless worker otherwise? But maybe someone should make him take a break.]

Meet and Greet/Games

[Spooky McNinja here is… around for all the social shit. He doesn’t take a name tag though and sits off to the side. Listening but otherwise not engaging.]

[It’s hard to tell if he’s annoyed or not. But eventually, he’ll just walk off mid-game round, even if someone talked him into playing for a bit. Wow, rude.]

Miasma

[He’s not so stupid to touch that shit- his [Threat Detection] screaming any time he’s within sight of it. Literally you might see him bristle up like a cat and jump away right before it appears. He’s a good warning system for those around him though.

But eventually, even with his Skills he can’t avoid breathing it in, and freezes, eyes glassy and far away… until he snarls at nothing. And anyone sensitive to such things might feel an intense murderous intent radiating off him- or even just be able to tell from the mad look in his eyes. With a curse he yanks his scarf over his face to block the ‘smoke’ and skitters back]

… we should just burn this place to the ground.

[She stares down at the stickers for a moment before writing "Marona" in neat lettering and sticking it to her uniform shirt. Is. Is this sufficient. She's not really used to operating in a group here.

[She's just going to occupy herself with staring at the house away from everyone else, which means she's a ripe target for being dragged into shenanigans. Please get this girl to play with others, it would be a fun and exciting new experience.]

[When the sounds from the house begin, she spends a lot more time watching the place. And once the black clouds become an issue, she's even more on guard, quickly backing away from any that appear. At some point or another she decided to keep her sword with her, but she doesn't move to grab it at this time.]

[The teenager wandered the walls, eyes flicking up at the ceiling, then around, examining the room with wide-eyed curiosity.

He can be seen gingerly approaching a television set, seemingly oddly reluctant to touch it, or looking utterly gobsmacked at the buffet table in the dining area]

Is it... really fine to have all this out? I suppose so...

[Or alternatively, after some questions, he was lead to a vinyl record player with headphones. His lips pursed as the needle drops onto the record, before his eyes shot open, his lips parted in a silent gasp... are his hands trembling?]

[There were no complaints from him, he just worked - clearing out the ground for the tents, humming softly to himself as he sets up tents with the ease of someone who has done this a hundred times before. When he sees someone struggling with a tent or carrying equipment, he's quick to come over]

[Hurry up and wait - that's just how it is no matter where you are with a paramilitary force big enough. He knows how to deal with it, how to kill time without getting distracted by the activities... but not everyone does.

He unsheathed his sword, taking practice swings at the edge of the camp, little arcs of electricity occasionally running down the length of it. He went like this for at least two hours a day, every movement precise and well-honed.

When he wasn't training, he's shyly hanging around groups, observing but not quite bringing himself to ask to be included]

[Ango has practical experience in leadership roles, which shows up fairly quickly once they are on-site. He takes up the job of directing people around, breaking people up into groups for tasks so that the work can get done quickly.

The flip-side is that he can be a bit bossy, and he doesn't actually have any rank to pull here, so. Is your character going to listen to the order Ango just gave, or are they going to say 'fuck the police'?]

[ Well, investigating things like this is pretty much the norm at this rate, considering the Holy Grail War that she had to participate in. But doing it in a huge group is definitely anything but.

Even if this is another world - Second Magic? - that doesn't necessarily mean that she's going to out herself as a magus.

Which means that she'll be assisting with helping out, looking rather serious as she does so. This is a job, as simple as that. And maybe if she plays along with this whole 'SCP' stuff, she'll be able to find a way back home.

But some of the stuff is a little difficult for a single person to do, so she'll definitely walk and make an attempt to be cordial. ]

Which is why someone might find her looking like she's in a bit of a trance with an empty look almost glazed over her eyes when she's near some of the plants or even the wind, which seems to actually help her. ]

[There's a general bad feeling around the camp, dark patches of fog settling in and creeping around the edges of tents and boxes, and Yuri doesn't like it. What she wouldn't give for a couple holy water grenades right now...

Getting closer to the house doesn't really give any clues, even trying to follow the sound reveals nothing actually visible (not that SCPs actually follow any kind of logic that Yuri's brought along with her from Assiah, but she was kind of hoping to actually be able to see a ghost or two to go along with the sobbing).

Right now, her main focus is going to be on anyone who made the mistake of touching that miasma, checking in on them and trying to boost the general mood.]

[Yeah this dude is just watching the proceedings and not lifting a single hand to help. Though to be fair, he only has one - his left arm seems to be missing from the shoulder, and he lets the sleeve of his orange coveralls dangle limply at his side.]

B. Arts and Crafts time

[He doesn't grab one of the name tags. He does, however, sit with a sketchpad leaned up against one leg, doing rough sketches of the characters he sees grabbing them. Some are rougher than others, mainly the ones he hasn't really seen around as much up until this point.]

[ He's twenty-one and wearing a lab coat over his uniform, with his sticker displayed proudly on his coat pocket. Dr. Saphir Wyon Neis is written out on it in exaggerated calligraphy, something he has clearly been practicing since he arrived in this world with all its strange foreign alphabets. Malkuth Imperial Army is forced into the limited space below his name.

He's got a notebook in hand and is writing down the other names as he comes across them. Definitely not for keeping track of who sucks and needs to be tattled on to the higher-ups later, just for reference!!! ]

[ It has... been a very long time since Saphir has played in any kind of game, actually, because his social circle in recent years has been Just Jade, and he and Jade always have too many important things to do to waste time acting like children or problematic gamblers!!

He's writing in his notebook again -- maybe jotting down his opinions on everyone so far, but joke's on you because it's in the Fonic alphabet so you can't see what he's saying or tell how crappy his handwriting actually is in his own language! -- but standing close by to whatever game is going on and glancing up from his notes with conspicuous frequency to see if he's getting the attention of anyone who might extend an invitation. NOT THAT HE NEEDS ONE!! ]

[So apparently the Foundation sent a robot along? She's just close enough to looking convincingly human that the Foundation managed to get her in here undetected, but the moment she starts carrying equipment her obviously mechanical arms (and pretty incredible strength) are on full display.

Interestingly, while she's competent enough to follow instructions with the recording equipment and such, her main area of expertise seems to be... camping.]

[While she's been perfectly neutral in tone and expression otherwise, Olympia's weirdly cheerful when she's "socializing," especially given that she isn't actually all that social. She doesn't volunteer much information, she doesn't elaborate much when people ask her questions. Which is not to say that she's avoiding people.

One thing that's easy to learn about her is that, apparently, she eats. Not that she seems to be all that good at it, considering the orange she doesn't bother to peel before biting into.]

[Perhaps unsurprisingly, the robot is taking a very logical and methodical approach to the sounds coming from inside the house. Whenever that sobbing starts up again, her attention snaps toward it immediately and she starts slowly circling the building, trying to triangulate its source.

That's what she's doing when, one day, she wanders into one of the black clouds. Her expression is as blank as ever, but she immediately freezes in place.]

[ it's very easy to tell that jack morrison is a soldier by trade. the closer and closer it gets to the 11th, the more serious he's getting. he's still laughing and joking around with people who are talking with him, but otherwise, he's just keeping watch over the house. the noises are especially a warning sign, those sorts of sounds have never been a good sign. he's gone up to the windows more than once just to see what he could make out, but there's nothing there.

he's trying to herd as many people away from that black fog as it rolls around. he's eyeing it suspiciously. he doesn't want to make any connections, but also-- it's not something he's ever like the sight of. but it's hard to keep yourself free of it if you're trying to keep people away from it, and as it brushes by him, his face stiffens and he just gets a thousand yard stare.

[On the way here, if you managed to be travelling along with him - you might have noticed that he went extremely pale and started muttering under his breath about 'crash' or 'fall' when higher speeds were reached. He pretty much was white knuckled until they got to the House, tbh.

Regardless, it only takes a few minutes before he seemingly shakes it off and jumps into the act of carrying things to and fro from the site, carrying surprisingly more than his frame suggests he should. Guess he's just one of those leaner-yet-strong guys, huh? He doesn't seem to really be getting too tired, either - cheerfully smiling at anyone walking by.

It's during a break that he finally goes to sit down next to a bunch of boxes he just hauled in with a bottle of water, wiping off his forehead.]

...Whew! Man... I gotta say that I was expecting something way more immediately dangerous than just carrying around a bunch of boxes for my first mission.

More importantly, it's where Battler's stashed his book - so even if someone's standing in front of it, afraid to touch it, he just...goes on right ahead, like he can't even see the fog.

And actually...when he grips the tent flap, the fog clinging to it just....disappears wherever he touches, leaving an imprint of his hand behind.

He doesn't seem to notice as he retrieves his book, giving a quick 'thanks' and wave to the person he just passed by.

Later on, you might be able to see him walking directly through the small fog clouds without any issue - and just like with the tent flap, any part of the fog that touches him just stops existing.

Finally, when the crying starts, Battler again doesn't seem to notice - even on the nights where it's particularly loud, just minding his own business with nary a care in the world.

[ Valmont can't say he particularly likes being here. If it weren't for the pay, he wouldn't have accepted this "agent" position at all. He really doesn't like some of the more... outstanding personalities he's encountered thus far among his fellow operatives, and the mission hasn't even started yet.

But he doesn't mind the dog.

As everyone else struggles around him with boxes and equipment, Valmont takes up a leadership role: that is to say, looking on imperiously and occasionally pointing out someone's sloppy lifting form. His attention isn't as focused on his coworkers as it could be, though. Instead, he's idly scratching between the ears of his canine companion, contemplating. For all that he suspects the beast's not a purebreed, he really is an awfully endearing little fellow. ]

[ After a minute or two of fruitless brainstorming (Fido? No, it's been done), Valmont decides to open up the floor. He calls out to the next passing agent who doesn't look too busy carting supplies, or, hell, even the next one who does: ]

[ Valmont's not a complete idiot. You see the ominous black clouds, you avoid the ominous black clouds. Especially given the way his dog's hackles rise when they're nearby; the creature's clearly got some guard dog in him, and Valmont appreciates the warning. The problem with ominous black clouds, though, is that they tend to coalesce into being where you don't expect them, and at some inevitable point he'll end up turning and getting a batch of fog in the face.

He steps back, of course, after a second or two, but the damage is done. His face is ashen, and he wheels on the nearest agent, clearly rattled. ]

All right, this is - no one told me I'd have to experience that for one second longer than - who's in charge here? If they're going to be putting us through severe psychological trauma before we even get inside the bloody house, I demand they up our pay!
