WEEK 6 - LOBELIA

Six weeks.

They had been here for that long, and still...the game was continuing.
Yet, it felt like they were finally about to reach the end of it...
Just a little longer. 🗈

Still, things were just the same as they had been the past few weeks.

The goats and servants were still around, and so too were the witches.
Yet, it felt like this week would be the week they would finally get all the pieces to the puzzle.
But...could they solve it?

Only time would tell.

I do, although my skills are a bit... lacking.

[ It isn't that he isn't good at it - no, the complete opposite. But rather, there's just no heart in Caim's cooking. ]

How so? And you're welcome to help if you'd like.

I am not exactly sure myself.

[ He actually has no idea what's wrong with it at all.

Hm. ]

... Are you truly alright with that?

[That's a little curious.

Kurama sighs softly at the question and nods.]

None of you are at fault for the vessels you were given. I've been trying to remember that. So yes, I'm truly alright with it.

[He doesn't hate Caar because he's wearing Holmes, he hates Caar because that's what happens when you put a fox and a foxhound in the same room.]

I see.

[ He finally truly seems to understand something - but soon shakes his head because of it, straightening himself out a little bit and walking a little more properly inside. ]

Then I do not mind assisting. If there is too much, I can see about sharing this with my lady.

[And just what does Caim see for that reaction, he wonders? Kurama moves to the side a little and gestures to the lined up ingredients and the pot of oil on the stove.]

I was going to make tempura and inari sushi.

[Yes, he likes inari sushi. Yes, he is a parody of himself.]

I see. Do you mind if I make something else to contrast it?

Not at all, go right ahead. I'll be interested to see what you choose.

[ Well, he floats on by, goes to pick things out from the cabinets and then.

What Kurama will find Caim making is. Tacos. It's Taco Tuesday. ]

[Pfffffft.

You know what? Fair enough. Kurama lets out a soft chuckle as he starts preparing things for frying.]

I admit I've sometimes thought about expanding my repertoire more to dishes from other countries.

It is good to expand your knowledge, yes.

[Kurama hums thoughtfully.]

Do you think you've learned much in your time here?

Yes. I have.

[Kurama considers that answer for a long moment as he coats the tempura.]

Does that make you happy?

I'm not sure. I've never considered it.

[Kurama is quiet again, thinking. There's the sizzle and pop of hot oil as he starts frying.]

Do you know what happiness feels like?

. . . I have never felt it before, nor have I have ever had a need to.

Hm. It's true that happiness isn't an absolute necessity to existence. It's possible to live without it. But not terribly pleasant.

[Pop. Hiss. Drip.]

And happiness can come in many forms. It's not all strobing rapturous joy. It can be the steady satisfaction of a job well done. The soft warmth of a particular person's presence. The bubble of laughter at a joke or a prank.

[ He's just going to continue on making these tacos as he listens carefully. ]

I suppose there are things that I do 'enjoy', but I do not necessarily think they make me 'happy'.

It can be a very blurry line between the two at times.

What do you think makes the difference between enjoyment and happiness?

I am not certain.

Based on the definition, you can benefit from them both but you don't necessarily have to be happy to enjoy something.

That's true.

[Kurama is quiet for a moment, thinking.]

As I see it, happiness is something that reaches deeper than enjoyment. Something like the saying that "Beauty is only skin deep"? Enjoyment is a good thing but it's skin deep. Happiness reaches all the way to the heart.

[ Caim nods in understanding as he listens to Kurama's words. ]

I see. [ He places a hand over his chest. ] I wonder what that's like.

It's a wonderful feeling for as long as it lasts.

[Kurama sounds wistful and a little sad. Neat rows of shrimp and chicken tempura are starting to line up on a drainage rack.]

Have you not felt anything yet that seemed to reach you more deeply?

. . . I do not think so. Or at least, I do not recognize it.
