Another week dawned.

But after the events at the trial, more than a few people would have wanted for time to stop still.

In this game, even unshakable loyalties....could be broken.🗈

If that were the case, then what was stopping even more horrible crimes from happening this thursday night?
And they knew they could do nothing to stop it from happening.

...Still, they had to continue the game, until one or both of the Witches admitted defeat, or the game itself came to a close.

Yet, they also felt as if something might change. Some big reveal felt as if it was just around the corner....but for now, it seemed as if they had to play the waiting game.

No matter how awful that felt.

[ Sakura is where she always is after eating dinner: the library...the one with the non-deadly books, that is. She's sitting in an armchair in the corner, a small pile of books at the table beside her. Presently, she's reading a book she'd gotten the first week The Collected Short Works of Edwin Alvin Potter. Everything's the same as she remembers, except that "The Fall of the House of Usher" is now "The Fall of the House of Ulberg." It makes her laugh a little.

She knows she probably shouldn't be reading these stories after night falls, alone in the library, but her inner spook enthusiast wins out. Just don't sneak up on her. Or do, and get a book to the face when she panics. ]

[Yeah he. He sees what book she's reading, and he can't help but indulge in a little prank. Which means quietly walking up behind her and leaning over her shoulder juuust barely, and reading part of a sentence on the page she is reading.]

you have not then seen it? But, stay! you shall.

[ HEY NOW I WARNED YOU

Sakura has an easy startle reflex and for that, she's going to be shrieking and tossing her book at the complete jerk standing behind her. ]

[And there's a yelp of surprise as the book collides with his face, knocking him backwards onto the ground.

Look. He's got a lot of magic power, but not much in terms of physical talent.]

[ They have that much in common. Aside from the archery. But still, a book to the face is a book to the face.

As soon as Sakura sees who she just knocked down, she makes a strangled-sounding noise and runs over. ]

O-Oh no! Watanuki-san...I'm so sorry! Are you alright?

[ does he need a hand? ]

[He might, because it seems as though he has been knocked out cold.

There is also a bump on his forehead. Whoops.]

Hello, Sora-san. It's a collection of short stories by Edgar Allen Poe. Er, his name is different in this library, but it's still the same text inside, at least.

I don't think I ever heard of him. Is it any good?

Oh yes, I like his stories a lot. He's a pretty famous horror writer in the world I come from.

Are they really scary? [ Peeking over at the page she's reading. ]

I find them more unsettling and eerie, instead of scary. But they were really inventive at the time he wrote them, so it's probably just because I've read a lot of newer horror stories.

[ She flips back to the beginning, looking delighted to get to ramble about this. ]

This one--"The Fall of the House of Usher"--is about a man who gets a letter from his childhood friend, Roderick, to come visit him. Roderick and his sister are the last of their family, which used to be really powerful but fell on hard times. [ BOY IT'S NOT LIKE SAKURA HAS ANY FAMILIARITY WITH THAT SCENARIO ] Roderick tells him he thinks their ancestral home is alive, and it's clear he's really sick, so you don't know if you believe him for a lot of the story. There's a great buildup of atmosphere and dread, but not anything really shocking or out there, you know?

[ except when they accidentally bury roderick's sister alive ]

Whoa! That does sound pretty creepy...

[ He can do straight up scary, but creepy? He's not really sure about. He does smile because she seems pretty enthusiastic. ]

Is that one your favorite?

One of them. But I think I like "The Masque of the Red Death" the best. That one's about a prince named Prospero. He takes a bunch of other nobles and hides them all away in his castle to wait out a plague that swept his land. One night, he holds a masquerade ball for his guests, only to find someone dressed as a victim of the plague. He's so offended by it, he wants to kill this guest, but everyone else is too afraid to approach him.

Prospero corners him and takes his mask off, only to find out that there was nothing underneath the whole time, and succumbs to the plague, along with the other guests.

"And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all". There was no escaping the plague in the first place.

Sort of. The way all of the names in these stories are slightly different, but everything else is the same...it just made me chuckle a little, ahaha.

[ Honestly, the thought was a little amusing, and it might be evident by the way his lips quirk slightly. ]

Makes me just wonder why didn't they just leave everything the same.

Maybe it wasn't on purpose? Everything could just have a different name due to being in a different universe.

It was just a theory. I mean...there's an idea called the many worlds interpretation. If there's a different universe for the day you picked different socks to wear, why couldn't there be one for where you had a different name?

[ don't look at her like that now she feels nervous!! ]

I don't believe I've heard of it, but something like a parallel universe isn't too out of the realm of possibility.

It's a known form of sorcery in my world. Well...known, but not easily used, of course.
